Giving Back In Honor Of Latinx Heritage Month: The TransLatin@ Coalition
For the month of September, our Giving Back initiative is an acknowledgment of generations of Latinx Americans and their positive contributions to society. In celebration of National Laxtinx Heritage Month, and in collaboration with our Pero Like team, Shop BuzzFeed is honored to announce that we will be donating 10% of the store’s profits to The TransLatin@ Coalition.
Founded in Los Angeles, CA in 2009, The TransLatin@ Coalition (TLC) was born as a response to the distinct needs of immigrant women in Los Angeles. TLC has since grown to see representation across ten states including opening The Center for Violence Prevention & Transgender Wellness in 2016 to address the interpersonal and systemic violence ailing the Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, and Intersex (TGI) community.
TLC continues to give agency to TGI individuals and trans immigrant women through their emphasis on day-to-day support, advocacy, education. From providing ESL classes and computer training to members so they may be empowered to seek secure occupational opportunities, to reentry programs for those in process of being released from jail, prison, or immigration detention centers. Apart from their work on the ground, TLC has published several reports in regard to structural oppression that keeps the women and their stories invisible. You can find more information regarding their published work here.
We would like to thank Alexis Garcia and the entire Pero Like team for connecting us to The TransLatin@ Coalition for the opportunity to support them through our Giving Back program.
